Are Kids Covered for Dental in Australia?
The Child Dental Benefits Schedule, school programs, and when private cover pays off.
Children have several avenues for subsidised dental care in Australia. Here's a clear breakdown of what's available and when private cover is worth adding.
Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS)
The main public program. Eligible children aged 2–17 receive up to $1,052 over two consecutive calendar years for basic dental services (check-ups, x-rays, cleaning, fillings, extractions, root canals for baby teeth). Eligible if the child received Family Tax Benefit Part A or certain other government payments in the prior financial year.
CDBS does not cover orthodontics, cosmetic treatment, hospital dental, or specialist referrals.
School dental programs
Many state governments run school dental programs for children in primary school. Services vary by state — some offer comprehensive care, others just screenings. Check your state health department's website.
When private extras cover is worth it for kids
Once children need orthodontic treatment (often starting age 10–14), private extras cover with orthodontic benefits can significantly reduce costs. Orthodontics typically costs $5,000–$9,000 privately; extras cover can contribute $1,500–$3,000 over the treatment period.
Timing
If orthodontic work is likely, take out extras cover well before it's needed — waiting periods for orthodontics are typically 12–24 months.
