Public vs Private Dental in Australia: What's the Real Difference?

Public dental waitlists can run years. Private dental can be expensive. Here's how to navigate both.

Australia has two-tiered dental system. Understanding both helps you get the care you need at the right cost.

Public dental

  • Cost: Free or heavily subsidised (varies by state and concession card status)
  • Wait times: 12 months to 3+ years in most states for non-urgent treatment
  • Eligibility: Concession card holders (Pension Card, Health Care Card), children (CDBS up to $1,052 over 2 years), veterans
  • Services: Basic check-ups, extractions, dentures — limited specialist and cosmetic services

Private dental

  • Cost: $180–$280 for a check-up and clean out of pocket; higher with private health extras cover
  • Wait times: Days to weeks for standard appointments
  • Services: Full range including cosmetic, orthodontic, implants, and specialist referrals

Tip

If you hold a Centrelink concession card, check your state's public dental scheme first — the wait is frustrating but the savings can be significant for major work.
