What Does Pet Insurance Cover in Australia?
Accidents, illnesses, wellness, dental, hereditary conditions — what's in and what's out.
Pet insurance in Australia covers a wide range of veterinary treatments — but with important limits and exclusions. Understanding what's in and out is essential before choosing a policy.
Accidents
Covered by almost all policies, including basic accident-only cover. This includes: fractures, lacerations, swallowing foreign objects, bite wounds, vehicle accidents, and toxic ingestions.
Illnesses
Covered by standard and comprehensive policies. Includes infections, digestive problems, skin conditions, ear infections, and serious illnesses like cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.
Illnesses diagnosed or showing symptoms before cover started are typically excluded as pre-existing conditions.
What is often excluded
- •Pre-existing conditions: Anything diagnosed before you took out cover, or that shows symptoms during the waiting period
- •Dental illness: Periodontal disease is often excluded — it's usually a separate add-on
- •Hereditary conditions: Hip dysplasia, breathing issues in brachycephalic breeds, and other breed-specific conditions may be excluded
- •Pregnancy and whelping: Not covered in standard policies
- •Preventive care: Vaccines, flea/tick/worming, desexing — these are wellness add-ons, not standard cover
- •Grooming and behavioural: Not covered
Waiting periods
| Cover type | Typical waiting period |
|---|---|
| Accidents | None (or 24–48 hours) |
| Illness | 14–30 days |
| Cruciate ligament conditions | 6 months |
| Hip dysplasia | 6 months (if covered at all) |
| Dental illness | 6 months |
Key insight
Take out pet insurance when your pet is young and healthy. Pre-existing conditions can't be covered retroactively, and waiting periods mean you can't take out cover the week before a planned surgery.
